At these stalls we have petitions and make information available for those who take the time to stop and engage with us. Small steps but they all help to spread the word and remind people that there are alternatives to consider.<strong> If you would like to see some photographs of these events, click in the blue links below and you&#8217;ll be taken to our image gallery.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On September 7th 2024 we had stall in Bedford Square, Tavistock in support of Palestine. There was a petition asking the government\u00a0 to stop exporting arms to Israel. This was sent to David Lammy.<\/li>\n<li>On Saturday August 3rd 2024 Tavistock Peace Action Group was in Bedford Square, Tavistock\u00a0 to commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.<\/li>\n<li>On May 18th 2024 we had stall in Bedford Square, Tavistock in support of Palestine. There was a petition asking the government to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and to stop exporting arms to Israel. This petition gathered over 100 signatures and was sent to Geoffrey Cox MP.<\/li>\n<li>Tavistock Peace Action Group will be holding a \u2018Ceasefire in Gaza\u2019 vigil every Friday in 2024 between 4 and 5 pm in Bedford Square, Tavistock until there is a permanent ceasefire. All welcome to join us.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0There was a very successful public talk<strong>\u00a0\u2018Militarism and Climate Change\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0by Tom Unterrainer, chair of CND, on Wednesday, February 7th 2024.<\/li>\n<li>On Saturday August 5th 2023 Tavistock Peace Action Group was in Bedford Square, Tavistock\u00a0 to commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;In Other Words&#8221; a play by Jenny and Paul Shryane of Script in Hand Theatre was staged at the the United Reformed Church, Russell St., Tavistock on Tuesday, May 23rd 2023.<\/li>\n<li>On April 4th 2023, 7.30 pm, Rowena Francis spoke about her experiences in the West Bank as part of the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel. &#8216;Eyewitness: Stories from Israel and the West Bank&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>At the Tavistock Peace Action Group&#8217;s meeting on the 7th of March 2023 the film &#8216;How to change the World&#8217; was shown.<\/li>\n<li>There was a public talk by Chris Cole, director of Drone Wars UK, titled &#8216;The Use of Armed Drones in Warfare&#8217; at 7.30 pm, United Reformed Church, Russell St., Tavistock on Tuesday, February 7th 2023. He is a well regarded campaigner and has given evidence to several Parliamentary committees.<\/li>\n<li>There will be a stall in Bedford Square, Tavistock to mark Hiroshima Day on Saturday August 6th 2022 between 11 am and 1 pm. Was WW1 a war for freedom or a confused and pointless conflict?\u00a0 Was it popular, or deeply divisive?\u00a0 A catastrophic blunder, causing further wars?\u00a0 Which caused more deaths, the war or Spanish flu?\u00a0 Did the war achieve votes for women? He gave us \u00a0the answers to these and other questions in an excellent presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=1007\"><strong>August 11th 2018<\/strong>:<\/a> We were in Bedford Square, Tavistock from 11 am to 1 pm to commemorate Hiroshima and to urge our government to sign the UN Global Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty and to cancel the replacement of Trident.\u00a0 Trident is militarily irrelevant in dealing with the security problems we face today. Replacing Trident is hugely expensive, especially when considered in the context of cuts to other areas of government spending. The use of nuclear weapons would be illegal under international law. Replacing Trident would also be unpopular internationally, with the majority of world governments calling for a ban.\u00a0 Many joined us to sign our CND petition to stop Trident<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=1001\">June 16th 2018:<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>TPAG, with the help of one member of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign in Plymouth, held a stall in Bedford Square, Tavistock to protest about the situation in Gaza and the Israeli treatment of Palestinians. We highlighted Razan Najjar who was a 21year old medic in a white jacket treating the wounded on the Gaza border when Israeli soldiers shot her dead in the chest. Razan\u2019s story is heart breaking, but it\u2019s also outrageous that Israel is getting away with cold blooded murder.\u00a0The UK should be condemning Israel for these war crimes and threatening sanctions at the least.\u00a0We handed out 70 leaflets about her urging Theresa May to sanction Israel.\u00a0 Many people also signed a PSC petition and took information leaflets about the dire situation in Gaza and Palestine in general.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=991\"><strong>May<\/strong> 1st 2018:<\/a> A talk<b>\u00a0<\/b>by\u00a0psychotherapist Shane Scott on<strong> &#8220;The Growing Mental Health Emergency in Present Day Palestine&#8221; <\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0in the Friends&#8217; Meeting House in the Bedford Car Park, Tavistock at 7.30 pm as part of our usual TPAG meeting. He was one of a group on a study tour of Palestine finding out about mental health issues there. The group was set up in the UK by the Palestine Mental Health Network.\u00a0 We showed a short film about the Balfour Declaration.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=940&amp;preview=true\"><strong>November 8th 2017:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0We organized a talk\u00a0 by Martin Mowforth<strong> &#8216;DEFENDING RIGHTS DEFENDERS&#8217;.\u00a0<\/strong>The northern triangle of Central America includes the three countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras where the world\u2019s highest homicide rates are found and where environmental and human rights defenders are at greater risk than in any other part of the world. This presentation examined the nature of the risks that defenders face, who they are, why they are exposed to such dangers and what these dangers have to do with us.\u00a0<strong>Defending Rights Defenders <\/strong>was a chance to explore ways in which we can better support rights defenders across Latin America.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=906\">August 11th 2017:<\/a><\/strong> To commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 72 years ago, we set up stall in Bedford Square Tavistock. We also linked the nuclear bombing of Japan with an anti-Trident protest giving out many leaflets and gathering a number of signatures on the CND petition: &#8216;Time to Stop Trident&#8217;. \u00a0The petition calls on the government to cancel the replacement of Trident, Britain&#8217;s nuclear weapons system and to support a global nuclear ban treaty. \u00a0A number of people also signed a &#8216;Stop the War&#8217; petition calling on the government to stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=708\">May 9th 2017:<\/a><\/strong> \u00a0A Story of Palestine: My personal journey through art and conflict. \u00a0How can the arts help transform lives is this setting of historic conflict? &#8211; a talk by David Oddie the director of Indra Congress &#8211; a global network of young people, artists, and others who share a commitment to developing the arts as a unique resource for transformation in settings of conflict. \u00a0The talk was the culmination of a 12-year partnership working with artists and young people in the West Bank, Palestine.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=328\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">March 4th 2017:<\/span> <\/a>&#8216;<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">NHS not Trident&#8217; and &#8216;Send a Card to Boris&#8217; stall in Bedford Square, Tavistock. \u00a0Many more signatures for CND&#8217;s &#8216;Stop Trident&#8217; petition were gathered and 28 cards will be forwarded to the Foreign Secretary via CND.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=359\">October 28th 2016:<\/a><\/strong> \u00a0Tim Coles gave a talk about his new book &#8211; <em>Britain&#8217;s Secret Wars<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span>T<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">he talk was well received with over 30 people there.\u00a0 Tim gave clear accounts of the many places in the world where Britain has been and is still involved in conflicts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=542\">August 5th 2016:<\/a><\/strong> \u00a0Once again in Bedford Square to remember the bombing of Hiroshima and \u00a0to say &#8216;Time to Scrap Trident!&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=689\">June 1st 2016:<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0Erdelan Baran from the Kurdistan National Congress (KNC) spoke<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span>about the Kurdish struggle , Turkish Kurdishtan and the Rojava Revolution.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The KNC is a broad body of mainly exiled Kurds from Turkey and elsewhere, set up at the original instigation of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party), the main Kurdish opposition to the Turkish regime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=524\">March 23rd 2016:\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0Dr. Alam Saleh, Lecturer in Middle Eastern Politics, of The Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter \u00a0spoke about the very complex and troubled politics of Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=524\">September 9th 2015:<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 &#8216;<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">The World is my Country&#8217; &#8211; workshop and talk. \u00a0Two speakers from Peace News (Gabriel Carlyle and Emily Johns) came with their display \u2018The world is my country: Celebrating the people and movements that opposed WW1\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=462\">April 18th 2015:<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0We had a CND&#8217;s &#8216;The People&#8217;s Ballot&#8217; Stall in Bedford Square. \u00a0The results of the ballot (42 against a Trident replacement and nine for) were sent off to CND before the election.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva,sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=185\"><strong>September 15th 2014:<\/strong><\/a> <strong>Road to Peace Exhibition. <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva,sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Tavistock Peace Action Group has created a 21 board exhibition about the slide into war in 1914, also covering enlistment, conscription and conscientious objection.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva,sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">&#8216;The Challenging Road to Peace since the First World War&#8217;\u00a0lists the men of the Devon town killed\u00a0in the conflict, their ages and where they died. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva,sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The exhibition then considers\u00a0the legacy of the war, with a four board timeline of the 100 years since.\u00a0It highlights the changes in international relations made by organisations like the UN and efforts to make a more peaceful world. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva,sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Finally it looks at the challenges of today which may lead us to war or a more peaceful future.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva,sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=270\"><strong>June 4th 2014:<\/strong><\/a> Martin Mowforth&#8217;s talk was\u00a0based on his book <u>The Violence of Development \u2013 Resource Depletion, Environmental Crises and Human Rights Abuses in Central America<\/u>\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva,sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=227\"><strong>April 8th 2014:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0A &#8216;Support the People of Gaza&#8217; stall in Bedford Square.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva,sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=285\"><strong>July 2nd 2013:<\/strong><\/a> Susan Clarkson spoke of her visit to Afghanistan to meet and to establish links with the Afghan people &#8211; &#8216;A journey of Hope from Oxford to Kabul: two weeks with the community of Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva,sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tavypeace.org.uk\/?page_id=315\"><strong>July 2nd 2013:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Representing Tavistock Peace Action Group in Tavistock Town Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva,sans-serif; This time as a stopping point for Bruce Kent on his &#8216;Stop Trident Tour&#8217;. He came down from Exeter to help distribute leaflets and talk to passers-by. As ever, a productive morning with many names collected for a petition and few more contacts added to our e-mail distribution list.
